FIBERGLASS BOATS

Over 90 percent of recreational boats are made of fiberglass. On this page we see how to best paint boats built in this material.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Degrease the surface with our antisilicone solvent SOLVENTE 102 and then sand it with medium sandpaper (n. 120-140).

HULL

– For preventive protection against osmosis, we recommend applying 3 coats of PRIMEPOX 6-24 hours apart (without sanding).
– 6-12 hours after the last coat of PRIMEPOX, apply a coat of antifouling and leave to dry for at least 6 hours (at 20° C).
– Apply a second coat of antifouling and leave to dry at least 24 hours (at 20° C) before launching.

It is advisable to apply a third coat of antifouling on the waterline, on the edges and on the parts most subject to wear.
If a preventive anti-osmosis cycle is not necessary, after preparing the surface you can proceed by applying a coat of FIBERGLASS PRIMER, left to dry for at least 4 hours (at 20° C). After applying FIBERGLASS PRIMER it is never necessary to sand before applying antifouling (there is no maximum recoating time).

TOPSIDE

– Apply one coat of EPOPLASTIC and wait at least 12 hours (at 20° C)
– Sand the surface with medium sandpaper (n.150-180)
– Apply a second coat of EPOPLASTIC and wait at least 12 hours (at 20° C)
– Sand the surface with medium-fine sandpaper (n.180-220)
– Apply one coat of polyurethane enamel EVERGLOSS and wait at least 6 hours (at 20° C)
– Water sand the surface with fine sandpaper (n.240-280)
– Apply a second coat of polyurethane enamel EVERGLOSS If the surface is in good conditions sand with medium-fine sandpaper and then apply two coats of EVERGLOSS enamel directly on the gelcoat. Also, if the two coats of EVERGLOSS are applied within 8 hours, there is no need to sand between coats. However, in order to eliminate any eventual imperfection from the first coat, such as dust or insects, it is advisable to slightly water sand the surface with fine sandpaper (n.240-280).

INNER NON VISIBLE PARTS – BILGES

EPOGEL is the ideal product for painting, bilges, tanks, fridges, engine rooms. Sand the surface with a rather coarse grain (n.80 – 100), then apply two coats of EPOGEL. EPOGEL protects and waterproofs the fiberglass from the inside. It is an extremely hard product, resistant to chemical agents, easy to clean and long lasting. It also has the property of blocking the strong odor that fiberglass gives off especially when it is new.
